Be Grateful for Israel—and Thank God for America
Be Grateful for Israel—and Thank God for America

Last night, we had the joy of celebrating Thanksgiving with dear friends in a beautiful La Jolla home. Surrounded by loved ones, an abundance of food, and a warm atmosphere, the evening was a heartfelt tribute to gratitude and meaningful reflection.
As with many gatherings and celebrations, the topic of Israel naturally became a central point of discussion. Among the guests was a retired couple, both Columbia-educated—he, an American, and she, an Israeli-Polish.

During our discussion, the husband shared, “I feel very safe in America, and frankly, I don’t feel I need Israel to feel safe here.” His wife, a granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, strongly disagreed. A few guests nodded in agreement with him, but the rest of us—immigrants and staunch Zionists—voiced our opposition, emphasizing Israel’s critical role as a safeguard for Jews everywhere.

It’s hard to fathom how some Jews still fail to recognize Israel as their ultimate security blanket—a lifeline for the Jewish diaspora. This mindset, in my view, is one of the most dangerous misconceptions. FBI Director Christopher Wray’s testimony before Congress underscores the threats we face, noting that terrorism includes “not just homegrown violent extremists inspired by a foreign terrorist organization but also domestic violent extremists targeting Jewish or Muslim communities.”

@soffersabrina essay in Young Zionist Voices, edited by David Hazony, perfectly encapsulates the profound connection between Zionism and gratitude:
“The most important element of being a Zionist is gratitude. What would have become of me without the Jewish homeland? Israel was my family’s ticket to protection, prosperity, and thus my own. Israel extends beyond physical boundaries. Israel is more than a state; it is the embodiment of resilience, strength, and identity for Jews worldwide. It ensures that wherever we are, we remain protected.”

Let us be grateful for Israel, for leaders who take decisive action, and for the privilege to gather in safety and celebrate our blessings.

The Parallel of Thanksgiving to Zionists
A Lesson

The Parallel of Thanksgiving to Zionists
A Lesson in Good Faith, Betrayal, and Grit 🦃

Enlighten Thanksgiving with a profound commemoration of survival, resilience, and shared humanity. The story of the pilgrims and the Wampanoag teaches us about extraordinary acts of courage and goodwill that saved lives, alongside the tragic betrayals and bloodshed that followed. These timeless themes—trust, resilience, and broken promises—echo across history and resonate in the challenges we face today, including the rise of modern #Antisemitism.

The Pilgrims, much like Zionists, sought refuge from religious persecution, dreaming of a sanctuary where they could thrive in safety. Similarly, the goodwill extended by the Wampanoag, which ensured the Pilgrims’ survival, was ultimately met with betrayal and bloodshed. A striking parallel can be seen in the tragic events of October 7, when gestures of goodwill and cooperation were violently shattered.

In Israel’s southern kibbutzim, efforts to foster hope and shared prosperity included providing jobs and resources to their Gazan neighbors, reflecting trust and interdependence. Despite financial support aimed at fostering stability, the attacks on October 7 by Hamas marked a devastating betrayal of these overtures, tragically echoing the Wampanoag’s painful experience.

A Call to Action: Upholding Thanksgiving’s True Spirit
This Thanksgiving, let’s honor the holiday by sharing its true story—a narrative of resilience, betrayal, and the enduring pursuit of justice. History reminds us that persecution, good faith, and grit are not relics of the past but urgent realities of today.
• Stand against antisemitism and the tides of bigotry.
• Embrace #Courage, #Perseverance, and #Unity in the face of adversity.
